I’ve been working with Ellen since May 2017. With her guidance, we’ve taken a fresh look at our children’s literature, music, dramatic play areas, and the ways we interact with kids. Ellen has also worked with our community to increase our awareness of unconscious bias. All this has resulted in our program becoming even more inclusive and empowering. ”

 About Authentic You

What if you could transform the next generation of children in your classrooms or organizations?
What if children experienced equity in your care instead of just hearing about it?
What if your classrooms, playgrounds, and programs were the antidotes to what kids see in the world?
Gender equity ensures that no kid will be thought of as “less than” or “more than” because of their gender.
What would an equitable classroom or program look like to you?
What would it feel like?
Authentic You provides tools so you can build the gender-equity environment you envision with anti-racist and other anti-bias perspectives.

About Ellen Hohbach Scheetz

I am committed to providing the next generation of children with the experience of gender equity (with anti-racist and other anti-bias perspectives) so they can create a world that is fairer for themselves and others.

Each of us has more influence than we’ve been led to believe. With our words, expectations, materials, and environment we can transform our children’s experiences.

I have had numerous limitations put on me because of my gender and know our kids deserve better. Our world can do better.

Guiding Principles for Developing Whole Children

Here you’ll find each principle described, an explanation of why it’s important, examples of what it looks like in an adult, and how we can develop these principles in our children. See the full list of Guiding Principles here.

Blog

As we each are aware of different ways bias shows up in our lives, we need to share what we’ve experienced, learned, and observed with each other.  By talking about bias, we raise each other’s awareness and can do something about the problem. In my posts, I share what I have become aware of.

FAQ

Parenting with a gender equity perspective is breaking new ground. Questions from parents are answered in the FAQ section. If you don’t find your question, please send it to me through the Contact form.

Movie Ratings

Kids’ movies, shows, and video games are strong influencers in our children’s lives. Authentic You’s Equity 8 tool helps parents evaluate in a new way the messages being sent.

You’ll also find a deeper analysis of two themes in a popular 2018 movie, how characters are clothed and whether mutual respect exists between the female and male characters, that demonstrates what can be communicated in kids’ entertainment.

Book Ratings

We can develop a sense of gender equity in children with books that convey the value and capability of all kids. More than forty children’s books are rated and the rating tool is explained.
